Matinees Have Been Discontinued

Dear Jazz Fans

A little over two years ago we started providing matinees to complement our evening shows. The sole purpose of these matinees was to give an opportunity to young people in the community to see the shows. One of the mandates of our society is to provide the enjoyment of jazz for youth. Our liquor licence however, restricted minors from our evening shows.

After 2 years of matinees, we have observed that very few young people come to the matinees and our tickets sales for evening shows have dropped significantly. Coupled with this is a significant increase in the costs associated with operating the club. Even with a 50% increase in ticket price for matinees, they just break even at best.
There are other factors as well; many bands travel long distances and have difficulty getting to the matinees, local bands often have to arrange to miss work to play a matinee, and more volunteer work is required.

We tried our best to find a way to keep the matinees but the economic reality is that if we are not financially stable our ability to provide live jazz at all is at risk. What we are doing is a good thing for all involved; the audience, the bands, and the society as without this change we could face difficulty in continuing.

We hope you will understand the difficult decision that we had to make and will continue to support the Vernon Jazz Society by coming to evening shows whenever you can and volunteering if possible.

Thank you for your understanding.
