"THE JAZZ OASIS"
Friday March 28

Alexis Baro Sextet

Alexis Baro was born and raised in the mecca of Latin music, Havana, Cuba. He grew up in a musical family and began playing the trumpet at a very early age. Inspired by his mother and aunt (both of whom played with the national ballet and symphonic orchestras of Cuba), Baro received classical training and earned his teaching certification from the famed Amadeo Roldan Music Institute in Havana. Since relocating permanently to Toronto in 2001, he has toured extensively throughout Canada and Europe performing with various artists and has been the lead trumpet on the Canadian Idol show for the past three seasons.

He performed at the 50th Anniversary Concert of "The Quintet" at Massey Hall in Toronto as a member of the Massey Hall All Star Big Band. In 2004 he was honored as a co-winner of the National Jazz Award for best acoustic group (Kollage).

Baro has been a nominee in 2005, 2006 and 2007 for best Trumpet player at the National Jazz Awards and has received a Gemini Award for a live television performance with hard bop band Kollage. He has performed with many artists such as Kollage, Paquito D’Riviera, David Foster, Andrea Bocelli, Hilario Duran, The Temptations, John Secada, NOJO, CaneFire, Alex Cuba, Son Ache, Johannes Linstead, Cassava, Ruben Vazquez, Adonis Puentes, and The Puentes Brothers. He was most recently a featured soloist on Hilario Duran’s Juno Award winning CD “From The Heart”.
